Easy make stitch markers

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

Making snagless stitch markers is very simple and requires only a small number of tools and supplies. The purpose of having them snagless is to ensure they don't catch on yarn or any other fibres your working on, they also need to be able to slide easily on and off your knitting needles.

The tools required include:

  • Jewellery pliers

  • Round nose pliers

  • Wire cutters

For the supplies:

  • Tiger tail cut into 8cm lengths

  • A selection of beads (approximately 6mm)

  • Crimp beads

  • Spacer beads (if desired)

To begin making your markers use the wire cutters to cut the tiger tail into 8cm strips. Next fold the cut lengths in half and thread through a crimp bead. Move the crimp bead up the tiger tail until you have a loop approximately 2cm long, use the jewellery pliers and close down on the crimp bead securing it in place.

Next, begin adding your chosen beads in what ever order you like. Once you happy with your placement, add another crimp bead.

Using the jewellery pliers, move the crimp bead up as high as you can. Once in place press down with the pliers and secure in place. Try not to use too much pressure as these are quite delicate and can snap. You want enough pressure that the crimp beads grip on to the tiger tail.

Lastly you want to use the wire cutters and snip off the excess tiger tail, get as close to the crimp bead as you feel comfortable with.

And your done!!!

Using this technique, there are many unique designs you can create and by adjusting the size of the loop before crimping, you can make them for any knitting needle size you require.
